Our Programs
Health, Education and Social Empowerment
THT delivers its advocacy through three thematic program areas. Each program addresses a specific set of concerns for persons with disabilities in Rwanda and works toward measurable outcomes.
Thematic Area I: Health
Program goal: To advocate for inclusive health services and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for persons with disabilities in Rwanda.
Key program objectives
- Establish partnerships with coalition groups working with THT.
- Raise awareness and increase accessibility in-house, ensuring attention to the needs of persons with disabilities is an integral part of our current work.
- Ensure that SRHR programs and social policies reach and serve persons with disabilities.
- Address the issues of persons with disabilities in national SRHR policy, laws and budgets.
- Promote research on the SRHR of persons with disabilities.
Expected outcomes
- Inclusive policy and legal framework and strategies targeting persons with disabilities
- Improved access to SRHR resources, information and services tailored towards the needs of persons with disabilities
- Stronger and more inclusive disability movements for SRHR
Thematic Area II: Education
Program goal: To promote the inclusion of persons with disabilities in formal and non-formal education, in order to enhance their access to employment and participation in civic and economic processes.
Key program objectives
- Make provisions for inclusive education for pre-school children with disabilities.
- Provide practical skills training and education for children with disabilities.
- Provide training opportunities for parents of children with disabilities, especially in respect of learning skills for better communication with their children.
Thematic Area III: Social Empowerment
Program goal: Our advocacy works primarily to change the social behavior of public leaders and decision-makers. Towards the realization of the UNCRPD and towards the achievement of the NST1 and development goals, our coalition advocacy mobilizes governments, international organizations, civil society, the private sector and other stakeholders to support persons with disabilities in Rwanda — translating commitments into concrete actions.
Key program objectives
- Ensure capacity for informed, evidence-based response for empowering persons with disabilities in Rwanda.
- Persons with disabilities and their families have improved access to information and access to justice.
- Communication barriers for persons with disabilities are reduced and/or eliminated through culture and art.
- Persons with disabilities and their families represent themselves in their respective communities through self-help groups and self-advocacy.
- THT personnel are effective communicators and share information with all stakeholders, including those who have communication difficulties in Rwanda.
